So I decided to Ride my bike across Iowa with 20,000+ other people

So what is RAGBRAI? and Why are you riding your bike across IOWA?

Well why not? Seems like a fun idea, and some of the guys that I am going with have done it the last several years, AND they are going back to do it again.

RAGBRAI, The Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa, is an annual seven-day bicycle ride across the state. Heading into its 43rd year, RAGBRAI is the oldest, largest and longest bicycle touring event in the world.

this rolling celebration of Iowa attracts participants from all 50 states and many foreign countries. It has covered thousands of miles through the years, and hundreds of thousands of riders have hopped in the saddle to pedal part of those miles.

It started in 1973 as a six-day ride across the state of Iowa by two Des Moines Register columnists who invited a few friends along.

The RAGBRAI route averages 468 miles and is not necessarily flat. It begins somewhere along Iowa’s western border on the Missouri River and ends along the eastern border on the Mississippi River.

The people of Iowa truly make RAGBRAI the special event that it is by opening up their towns and communities to participants.

RAGBRAI is limited to 8,500 week-long riders and 1,500 day riders. Entries can exceed the number of riders allowed, so a random computer lottery takes place after all of the entries are entered in the computer.

So this year, I am going to the ride the 450+ miles with several others, and will be posting pictures and comments along the way. This ride will be very different from last year's Natchez Trace ride, as last year it was just me on the road, and I don't think that I will ever be alone this year.

Stay tuned, the ride starts Sunday, July 22nd, although the trip will start several days before hand. We will be traveling to Iowa, and then across the state by the transportation company to get us to the start of the ride.

So I will have plenty of time to add more pictures along the way. I am looking forward to the adventure.
